WILL YAO EVER PLAY AGAIN?

The Houston Rockets already said that Yao Ming's recovery from a broken foot was behind schedule, but that setback might now cost him all of next season or worse.
"At this point, the injury has the potential for him missing this next season and could be career threatening," team physician Tom Clanton said, according to the Houston Chronicle. "One of the things we are trying to get is a consensus opinion on that, to make certain there is no option we are overlooking that would provide an earlier return or would be an option for treatment that he would prefer rather than doing additional surgery."
The team is weighing different options. Yao suffered a hairline fracture of the tarsal navicular bone of his left foot in the Rockets' second-round playoff loss to the Lakers on May 8. The team initially said Yao would miss eight to 12 weeks, but a bone scan last week revealed that the fracture is not healing properly.

MAYBACH 62 ZEPPELIN

Never mind the economy: Maybach is still making money. The 5.7 meter long Maybach 57 and the 6.2 meter long Maybach 62 remain despite their bumper-to-bumper hand-craftedness—serious cash cows for Germany’s Daimler AG, the parent company of Mercedes-Benz. Unique to the Zeppelins is an available perfume atomizer that silently and automatically sprays one of two scents into the cabin: light and refreshing or slightly heavier and woodsier. The modern Zeppelins pack fearsome 12-cylinder engines, a twin-turbocharged 6.0-liter V-12 producing a monumental 640 horsepower and 738 foot-pounds of torque. Although U.S.-market pricing hasn’t been announced, the German-market sticker for the 57 Zeppelin is 406,000 euros (about $538,000) and 473,200 euros (about $628,000) for the 62 Zeppelin. The nifty perfume atomizer will add a cool 3,950 euros (around $5,300) to the bottom line. Success has never smelled quite so sweet.

KOBE ISN'T GOING ANYWHERE, DUH!

Kobe Bryant said he plans to stay with the NBA champion Los Angeles Lakers even if he opts out of his contract this summer. Phil Jackson said his health will dictate whether he returns as coach. Bryant met with Jackson and general manager Mitch Kupchak for an individual exit interview today. The finals MVP can terminate the last two years of his contract and become an unrestricted free agent on July 1. He's spent his entire 13-year career with the Lakers, winning four NBA championships. But he could get a new, more lucrative and longer deal if he opted out.
Asked by reporters if he would opt out, Bryant said, "I've been deflecting that all year and I ain't going to stop now." Pressed to explain, he responded, "I'm not going anywhere. I know I ain't going nowhere, so it's just a waste of our breaths just talking about it."

"I SHOOT PEOPLE" THIS SATURDAY AT TRADITION

“I Shoot People” marks the debut unveiling of Trevor Traynor’s Hip Hop photography, his first step outside of his fine arts background. Trevor has been documenting the culture for the past six years; shooting live concerts, portrait shots, album covers, magazine spreads, and more. Notable artists he’s worked with include Afrika Bambatta, Rakim, KRS-One, Nas, N.E.R.D., Mos Def, Q-Tip, De La Soul, M.I.A., Public Enemy, Wu-Tang Clan and much more. His portfolio is a who’s who of Hip Hop culture, from the underground to the mainstream, from the old school to the new school.
Hip-Hop culture was a big influence on Trevor early on. Trevor elaborates, “When I was a youngling in the late 80’s, I would try to break dance with my cousins in Long Island & sneak sessions on my brother’s turntables. I started emceeing on a Japanese label and opening for acts like Swollen Members and Souls of Mischief while my brother Shel Shock made beats for artist like AG (D.I.T.C), Casual (Hiero), & Dres (Black Sheep). I grew up in the golden years of the 90’s, and now I get to shoot people that inspire me. I am grateful for that.”
"I Shoot People" opens this Saturday at Tradition... See you there!

PHIL JACKSON "X" HAT

With a 99-86 win in Game 5, the Lakers won their 15th NBA championship in franchise history. As you know the series win gave coach Phil Jackson his record 10th title — six with the Bulls and four with the Lakers. Jackson now stands ahead of Red Auerbach who had won nine NBA titles, and he wore a hat at the post-game ceremony to commemorate his career. Check out the Roman Numberal “X” hat representing Phil’s 10 titles. It was yellow with purple stitching to represent the Lakers’ colors and it had the years of each title on the sides of the cap. Phil said his kids made the hat for him and even though he was deflecting the blame to them, there’s no doubt he was boasting by putting it on as soon as he won.

LAKERS WIN 15TH TITLE

Kobe Bryant has the NBA title he needed most, the one without Shaq. Bryant's seven-year chase of a coveted championship is over. He's got his fourth, and Los Angeles coach Phil Jackson his record 10th, a ring for each finger. One year after failing in the finals, Bryant and the Lakers have redemption, and all the rewards that go with it. They earned their 15th title tonight as Bryant scored 30 points and Pau Gasol added 14 and 15 rebounds in a 99-86 win in Game 5 over the Orlando Magic, who ran out of comebacks.
With Phil Jackson's 10th Championship, he can light his own victory cigar as he passed Red Auerbach for the most championships by a coach in NBA history.

INTERVIEW - TREVOR TRAYNOR

We just posted an interview with talented photographer Trevor Traynor in our features section. Trevor is the man behind the upcoming "I Shoot People" photo show which opens next Saturday, June 20th at Tradition. "I Shoot People" is a collection of over 200 photographs from some of Hip Hop's greatest artists.

BULLS DERRICK ROSE APOLOGIZES FOR GANG SIGN PHOTO

Chicago Bulls point guard Derrick Rose said he used "extremely poor judgment" in posing for a photo flashing a gang sign. The NBA's Rookie of the Year said in a statement issued through the Bulls that the photo circulating on the Internet was taken at a party he went to while at the University of Memphis. It was "meant as a joke … a bad one, I now admit," Rose said. Rose also said he was "guilty of being young, naive and of using extremely poor judgment," but has never been affiliated with a gang. "I can't speak loudly enough against gang violence, and things that gangs represent," he said. "I sincerely apologize to all my fans for my mistake."
Rose, the overall No. 1 pick in the 2008 NBA draft who led the Bulls to the playoffs, was already under a cloud cast by an NCAA investigation of major violations at Memphis during the only season he played there.

OAKS CHRISTIAN'S MONTANA COMMITS TO WASHINGTON

Nick Montana, the son of Pro Football Hall of Famer Joe Montana, has given an oral commitment to the University of Washington. Montana, who is listed at 6-feet-1, 180 pounds, is ranked the No. 13 quarterback in the class of 2010 by Scout.com and gives new Washington coach Steve Sarkisian a potential program-changing quarterback. Montana threw for 33 touchdowns and seven interceptions as a junior and possesses many of the same skills as his famous father.
Montana met Sarkisian when he was an assistant at USC and that relationship cultivated when Sarkisian took the Washington job in January. NATHAN SAWAYA: LEGO BRICK ARTIST

Some artists use paint, others bronze but for Nathan Sawaya he chooses to build his awe-inspiring art out of toy building blocks. LEGO® bricks to be exact. With more than 1.5 million colored bricks in his New York studio, Sawaya’s sculptures take many forms. Sawaya’s art is currently touring North American museums in a show titled, The Art of the Brick. It’s the only exhibition focusing exclusively on LEGO as an art medium. The creations, constructed from nearly one million pieces, were built from standard bricks beginning as early as 2002. More information on the tour, dates and locations can be found here. A full-time freelance artist, Sawaya accepts commissions from individuals, corporations, and … well just about anyone with a good idea! He’s also available to design and build custom creations at events, photo shoots and conventions. So let Sawaya know what you have in mind, there are literally no limits to what he can create out of LEGO.

PHARRELL GETS TATTOOS REMOVED

There has been alot of speculation for over a month now but its true, Pharrell Williams, the lead singer of N.E.R.D., is no longer enamored with his tattoos and the artist has started to have his body art removed. The rapper recently underwent laser surgery to have the tattoos burned out if his skin. Pharrell recently posted a picture of his bandaged arms after the surgery took place. "Laser treatment b**ches! Extra crispy. See, no skin graft here, just pure laser pain,” Pharrell said. “This is our own version of Mythbusters! Laser is the new primer."
Initially, Williams stated that he was going to attempt to cultivate new skin cells and graft the new tissue over his tattoos. In early 2008, he said, "It's going to be pricey, but f**k it, it's worth it. I got fire on my arms! I'm a grown man! There's an institute called the Wake Forest Institute in North Carolina for Regenerative Skin Treatment. It's basically like getting a skin graft, but you're not taking skin from your ass or your legs. These guys actually grow the skin for you.”
INTERVIEW: PATRICK MARTINEZ IN FORMATMAG

Our good friend and very talented artist, Patrick Martinez, just linked up with FormatMag for an interview. Alot of you saw the New Works show Patrick did with Eyeone at Tradition a few months ago... Patrick is on his grind, and you are going to see alot more from him in the future...
You can read the interview here.
Like so many kids growing up in the Pasadena Valley in the early ’90s, Patrick Martinez‘ formative years were shaped by bumping hip-hop in beat up Cutlasses and b-boy movies like Wildstyle and Style Wars. While graffiti is still an essential influence on Patrick’s artistic expressions, he has traded in his Montana cans for Windsor Newton University brushes. Influenced by city life and urban decay, Patrick seeks to bring supreme beauty to things that we might find flawed or broken.

INTERVIEW: RADIO SILENCE

I recently did an interview with Anthony Pappalardo, one of the authors of Radio Silence for the current issue of Vapors Magazine. You can read the entire unedited interview in the features section of our website.
Hardcore music reared it’s ugly head after punk rock hit in the late 1970’s. Hardcore had a new sound, a new look, and a new aggression that swept over the nation, with hundreds of bands emerging in cities all over the United States and beyond. Each city had their own crop of bands, their own ‘zines, their own labels, and most importantly their own scene.
Radio Silence is a visual history of American hardcore that documents the words and images of the pre-Internet era where this community built on do-it-yourself ethics thrived. I sat down with one of the authors, Anthony Pappalardo.

INTERVIEW: ESTEVAN ORIOL ON XWEDX
The homeys over at XWEDX just posted an in depth interview with famed photographer Estevan Oriol. You can read the interview here.
I’ve been in the middle of shoot-outs before, and I definitely try not to take pictures of that cause I don’t like to have photos that incriminate anybody, so I just would put the camera down...
I got love in the hood! Yeah, so nothing was directed at me ever. But I was photographing in the middle of a neighborhood and a guy from another neighborhood came by and they ended up shooting eachother, but I didn’t take any pictures, and they were wondering why, because the clients I was taking the pictures for sort of had a gangster element, and I just told them that I didn’t want to be the guy holding onto photos that incriminate nobody.

MIXTAPE: TERRY URBAN - SOUTHERNGOLD

Terry Urban just released a new mixtape with Gold Coin Clothing called Southerngold. The mixtape mixes Southern vocals over Santigold samples and tracks, and features Lil' Wayner, Outkast, Rick Ross, Young Jeezy, and more. You can download the mixtape here.
Terry Urban ran into a little trouble from Santigold's label regarding the mixtape, which you can read about below.
As many of you know, I’ve been preparing to releasing an exciting mixtape this summer called Southerngold. Basically, me mixing my favorite Southern rap vocals over remixed samples of my favorite Santigold influenced samples and tracks.
However, as I am about to release my mix on the internet tonight… literally, I am sitting at my desk in Brooklyn uploading the mix to YouSendIt.com, I get a cease and desist from lawyers at Santigold’s label, Downtown Records.
I’m not selling this, I’m not making a dime. I’m encouraging everyone to BUY Santigold’s album and I’m helping to expand her fan base to new markets. In addition, none of these songs are as they would appear on her actual album. EVERYTHING is remixed and redone so there is no competition with her actual in-stores album… It’s ironic that Downtown Records biggest group was signed due to a project with similar ambitions, Gnarls Barkley’s Danger Mouse with The Grey Album.
Sincerely,
Terry Urban

EMINEM TALKS ABOUT MTV STUNT

Three days ago at the MTV Movie Awards, Sacha Baron Cohen caused a firestorm as “Bruno” when he landed ass first on Eminem. Many speculated for the days whether the stunt was staged or real, with everyone speaking except the man himself. Breaking his silence, Em spoke exclusively to Rap Radar about the entire “ordeal”.
RR: Can you clear up the Bruno stunt at the MTV Awards? Was it staged or planned?
Sacha called me when we were in Europe and he had an idea to do something outrageous at the Movie Awards. I’m a big fan of his work so I agreed to get involved with the gag.
RR: Was it executed the way you agreed to, and if not, do you hold MTV or Sacha responsible and will you take any kind of action?
I’m thrilled that we pulled this off better than we rehearsed it. It had so many people going “nuts” so to speak. Everyone was blowing me up about it.
RR: After you left the ceremony, where did you go?
After the ceremony I went back to my hotel and laughed uncontrollably for about 3 hours. Especially after I saw it on air.
RR: There is a report today that your hotel room was robbed and thieves got 60K and your laptop while you were at ceremony. Is that true and if so what would someone find on your computer?
The only thing was that I lost a Nike watch that we were looking for. The rest it is made-up like half the other stuff out there.
RR: How do you think the show with Jay-Z went and how did it feel performing “Renegade” again?
I love performing with Jay. It’s the third time we’ve done the song together live and it’s always fun. It was an honor to share the stage with him again and to work with his band.

ORLANDO'S PIETRUS WON'T WEAR KOBE HYPERDUNKS IN THE FINALS

Orlando Magic guard Mickael Pietrus doesn't want to be in Kobe Bryant's shoes for the NBA Finals literally. Pietrus said he will not use the Bryant-endorsed Hyperdunk sneakers he has worn all season long in the championship series against the Los Angeles Lakers.
"I have some at my house, but I'm going to play with Michael Jordan shoes," Pietrus said.
Pietrus, who helped defend Cleveland star LeBron James in the East finals, cautions anyone who thinks he can stop Kobe cold. "The only thing I can do is try to minimize his touches in the fourth quarter," Pietrus said. "He's a tremendous player and those guys you can not stop them. So maybe I can say, 'Hey, stop, Kobe! Yo! Stop!' Maybe that's the only way I can stop him. 'Stop for a minute!'"

PHOTOS: CRO MAGS AT CHAIN REACTION

Last night we caught the Cro Mags at Chain Reaction in Anaheim with Cruel Hand and Outbreak. The Cro mags have been playing for over 20 years, and this line up is one of the best that I have seen. The band features Craig Ahead (SOIA/Straight Ahead) and AJ (Leeway) alongside founding members John Joseph and Mackie.
They tore through a selection of all of their classics and even threw in two Bad Brains covers for good measure. Every band got a great response including the openers...
The Cro Mags will be playing The Key Club in Hollywood on Tuesday... See ya there!

LAKERS VS MAGIC (NBA FINALS)

For those wondering how the Lakers will beat the Magic in the finals but couldn't beat them in the regular season, here's a couple of observations about those two regular-season games, which the Magic won 106-103 in Orlando on Dec. 20 and 109-103 in Los Angeles on Jan. 16.
One, Jameer Nelson was the leading scorer for Orlando in both games, torching the Lakers for a total of 55 points. He was another one of those quick point guards who have torn up L.A. throughout the season. But Nelson suffered a season-ending shoulder injury in February and won't be around to exploit the Lakers' biggest weakness. Midseason pickup Rafer Alston has had some effective games during the playoffs, but he won't lead the Magic in scoring this series.
Two, the Magic shot 40 percent or better on 3-pointers in both games, exceeding even their regular-season average of 38 percent. And they will have good shooting nights in the Finals. But will they have four of them?
The first is the Stage Fright Factor, the adjustment to playing in the Finals for the first time, as all of the Magic's top players will be doing. They'll see that this is not just another game. It will hit them the moment they step into the arena, with the banners and bunting hanging everywhere, the giant stickers on the court, the multitude of cameras affixed to the backboards, the reporters swarming around, the NBA Entertainment cameras in their faces from the breakfast table to the trainer's room.
