HOOKER PHOTO (SHAMWOW BEATING)

Im sure you have heard and seen our post of the Shamwow guy! Here's a look at ShamWow's Vince Shlomi's handiwork. The hooker Sasha Harris allegedly bit his tongue during a "business" meeting, so he punched her in return. Damn he put it on her! Haha

Disclaimer: I don't find violence against women funny, nor do I advocate or promote it.

U-N-I : HIP HOP OFFICIAL ARTIST OF THE WEEK

U-N-I's new album "A Love Supreme" dropped today. The album is a collab with Ro Blvd, and U-N-I are offering it as a free download on their website. I tried to download it earlier, and it said it would take 2 days and 21 hours, so I haven't had a chance to listen to it yet.
U-N-I’s latest offering, A Love Supreme, put forth with a “recession-proof theme”, continues the band's mission of expanding and texturizing hip-hop's conversation: tackling the lust, love and hate of relationships (“Right Now,” “Desha Dayana”), tossing crafty, whimsical odes to black actresses (“Lauren London”), dramatically dealing with the mundane aspects of struggling artistry through borderline poverty and senseless crime on the sublimely dark “Halftime.” Where Fried Chicken and Watermelon was a spontaneous and easy-going trip backed by a handful of producers, A Love Supreme is a matured and intimate journey produced entirely by west coast producer RO Blvd., who is steadily garnering acknowledgement in underground movements for his boundary-crossing inventiveness.

Y-O says, “We have the best circle of producers in Southern Cali period! We get the most respect out of all these LA groups because of our musical integrity. We have catchy azz hooks with dope lyrics & melodies. The concepts we come up with collectively are daring and that gains a lot of attention.”

JADAKISS FT. GHOSTFACE & RAEKWON - CARTEL GATHERING

Here's a brand new track from Jadakiss called "Cartel Gathering" featuring two of my favorites Ghostface and Raekwon. Jadakiss' upcoming album The Last Kiss drops April 7th.
In related news, Raekwon just announced that he has decided to partner with EMI for his Only Built 4 Cuban Linx 2 album. This is what he had to say...
“The project is vicious right now,” Raekwon said. “It’s done. I just closed my deal that I signed with EMI. I just signed off yesterday, and we made everything official. EMI is the home; they gave me a nice piece of what I needed..."
“It’s gonna be raw Hip Hop... We’re gonna keep it where we supposed to keep it. That album? That shit is gonna be better than your momma’s spaghetti, yo.”

MID CITY ARTS PRESENTS: CHAKA'S FIRST SOLO SHOW

Chaka was a graffiti legend when I was growing up. You couldn't drive more that a 5 mile distance any direction on any freeway in Los Angeles with out seeing his signature name scrawled in multiple places. It's good to see him getting his due, with his first ever solo show almost 18 years after his highly publicized arrest.

Mid-City Arts is pleased to present the first solo show ever from the infamous LA graffiti artist, Chaka. Resurrection opens April 25th and will feature highly anticipated new work from the mysterious Chaka.
Daniel Ramos, AKA Chaka, was 18 when he was arrested and charged in 1991 with 48 counts of vandalism, trespassing and causing $500,000 in property damage. Chaka’s signature tag had appeared in a staggering 10,000 locations from Orange County to San Francisco. At the height of his notoriety Chaka was demonized by mainstream media and culture as being little more than a prolific vandal. At the same time he was celebrated by street artists who admired the ability of a teenager from the projects to literally make his mark on the vast, glitzy LA cityscape in such a ubiquitous manner. He is credited with breaking away from the New York “wildstyle” popular at the time and introducing clearer, more blockish lettering into tagging. Chaka was one of the first to create a reputation as a recognizable individual tagger, and spawned many imitators. However Chaka was not just a lone operative. He was part of the LOD crew and as such, his work in reclaiming hard to reach places of the cityscape (freeway overpasses, walls, trains etc) on behalf of his crew is recognized by fellow taggers as a selfless achievement for LA’s graffiti scene as a whole.
After spending a year tracking down the once unavoidable Chaka, Mid-City Arts presents his first solo show. For Chaka’s fans as well as street art collectors, this will be a rare opportunity to revisit the nostalgia of the early 90’s, and own a piece of LA’s cultural history. Chaka himself will be in attendance and there will be a limited number of signed posters in addition to his works available for sale. The opening reception will take place April 25th, 7:00-9:00pm at Mid-City Arts, 5113 West Pico Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90019.

The LA Times recently ran an article about Chaka's upcoming show that you can read here.

MR. SHAMWOW/SLAP CHOP ARRESTED

The new King of late night infomercials was recently arrested for felony battery charges following a violent confrontation with a prostitute. Vince Shlomi is best known as the guy hawking both the Shamwow and Slap Chop products on television at 2:30 in the morning. You had to know that a slimy sales guy like that was really a sketchy dude!

Here's what the Smoking Gun uncovered...
MARCH 27--Meet Vince Shlomi. He's probably better known to you as the ShamWow Guy, the ubiquitous television pitchman who has been phenomenally successful peddling absorbent towels and food choppers. Shlomi, 44, was arrested last month on a felony battery charge following a violent confrontation with a prostitute in his South Beach hotel room. According to an arrest affidavit, Shlomi met Sasha Harris, 26, at a Miami Beach nightclub on February 7 and subsequently traveled with her to his $750 room at the lavish Setai Hotel. Shlomi told cops he paid Harris about $1000 in cash after she "propositioned him for straight sex." Shlomi said that when he kissed Harris, she suddenly "bit his tongue and would not let go." Shlomi then punched Harris several times until she released his tongue. The affidavit, a copy of which you'll find here, notes that during the 4 AM fight Harris sustained facial fractures and lacerations all over her face (she is pictured here in mug shots snapped following busts in 2008 and 2005). After freeing his tongue, a bleeding Shlomi ran to the Setai lobby, where security summoned cops. Harris refused to cooperate with officers, who recovered $930 from her purse. "Both parties had a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage emitting from their persons," police reported. In a brief telephone interview, Harris declined to answer TSG questions about her run-in with Shlomi, though she did say she is considering a lawsuit against the pitchman. Asked if she worked as a hooker, Harris declined comment. As seen in the below mug shot, Shlomi was also injured during the fracas and, court records show, was treated at Mount Sinai Medical Center. While Shlomi and Harris were both arrested for felony aggravated battery, prosecutors this month declined to file formal charges against the combatants. Police records list Shlomi's occupation as "Marketing," but make no mention of his affiliation with the ShamWow or the Slap Chop, both of which sell for $19.95 (plus shipping and handling).

EYEONE ON GUERILLA ONE

Guerilla One just ran a lengthy interview with the very talentedEyeone. You can read the entire interview here. If you have not seen Eyeone's current show with Patrick Martinez at Tradition I suggest you do so as soon as possible.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO BECOME AN ARTIST?
It has been a life-long process of inspiration and motivation for me. In the beginning, I was surrounded by art at home; both of my parents are highly creative. My dad is an amazing photographer, as is my mom. My mom also paints and sculpts also. My folks would also take me to museums and galleries since I was a baby. They also have a huge collection of books on art and photography that I read over and over.
As a kid I consumed large amounts of anything visual I could lay my eyes (and hands) on: comics, anime, cartoons, old and new movies, book and album covers, toys, gig flyers, ‘zines, video games, signage, porn, packaging… Pretty much the things that most kids growing up in the US are bombarded with.
When my family moved to the US (I was 6), gang writing both scared me and impressed me. Seeing Beat Street when it came out at a downtown theatre got me onto a form of graffiti I found more positive (although later on I found out the writing in the movie was mostly faked.) My grandma would take me around the city on the bus and walking, and I began to discern a few names that finally made me want to start writing: Mando and Neo MAK and Krenz aka Yem AM7. Linking up with two kids in my neighborhood, Gloze 54 OTR and Modem SH, encouraged me even further. We started linking up with cats from LOD, OTR, and SH; I eventually became a member of Seeking Heaven. Everyone in my crew continues to teach and inspire me.
A family friend, artist and musician, Leon Chavez Teixeiro, particularly inspired and influenced me through his art, which often consist of stark images of urban environments, often in bold black and white with minimal color. He also taught me many techniques that I have incorporated into my fine art and print work. His political activism and its relationship to art is also a big inspiration.

STREETWEAR AND THE RECESSION

Bobby from The Hundreds wrote an interesting article about our country's current recession and it's effect on the streetwear industry. I couldn't have said it better myself, so I am reposting it for all of you to read. Times are tough out there, so support the brands and stores that you love in hopes that they will all be there after we pull through this.

A few weeks back, Hypebeast asked me to answer a similarly-themed Q&A, but I failed to submit it in time, so I thought I’d voice my opinions on the blog. But as I sit here, backspacing over 750 words of recession digression, I realize that all I was doing was contributing to a greater problem, one in which the economy continues its spiraling malaise, churned by public fear, ignorance, and empty complaints.

I’m sure all of you are tired of hearing about it, so I’m not quite gonna go there. But I will say this. Times are tough, and times are getting worse. I’m not an economist, but from what I understand, this isn’t ending anytime soon. And so you will find that over the next year, your beloved Streetwear will start trimming the fat to survive. That means less stores, far fewer brands, reduced variety from your favorite labels. If you’ve been paying attention, you may have already started to notice it now. It’s Back to Basics, and not in a trend-forecasted “edgy” way, but out of a raw, desperate necessity. In 2009, it’s all about bare-bones, core, essential streetwear, minus the gratuitous fluff. (Which, if you’re seeing it my way, is a very good thing).

And so, for the sake of us, our peers in this industry, and fellow fans of the culture, it is up to you, the customer, to continue to support, encourage, and contribute to the craft. For the most part, streetwear is orchestrated by independents. We’re not cushy corporate honchos or veteran, spectacled businessmen behind mahogany desks. Most of us got into this because we were following a dream, that up ’til now has supported our livelihood… but as the financial ground dries up around us, it chokes the creative spirit that depended on it to survive, and thrive. And that’s where it comes back to you, the customer, to keep us breathing.

Because you see, streetwear has always been about the customer, the people. That’s where it started from and this economy is showing us that that is where it ends. It’s back to you, to make us relevant, cool, and at the very least, existent. And what do you get out of this? You will find us all working, thinking, and creating a lot harder to keep you engaged, dedicated to pushing ourselves and streetwear forward.

In the hopes that in the end, we will all win.

LAKERS BYNUM A MONTH AWAY

Andrew Bynum might not return to the Los Angeles Lakers before the NBA playoffs begin in April, coach Phil Jackson said yesterday. Jackson said Bynum is probably a month away from returning from a torn MCL in his right knee. The Lakers end their regular season on April 14, with the playoffs starting soon afterward. "I would say he's still like a month away from being a player," Jackson said, according to Los Angeles-area media reports. "And if he had to do that in the postseason, then he's going to have to do it. That's just part of it. It's going to change how he comes back obviously."

SHEPARD FAIREY X BAD BRAINS

Shepard Fairey is releasing the collaborative print with the legendary Bad Brains and photographer Glen E. Friedman. The 3 color print measures 24 x 18 and is signed by Shepard, Glen E Friedman, and all the original members of Bad Brains.

This is what Shepard had to say:
Bad Brains are one of my favorite punk/hardcore groups of all time. If you don’t have their self titled debut, “Rock For Light”, “I Agaist I”, or “Quickness”, they are all essential. I first heard Bad Brains at the beginning of 1984 when my friend lent me the brilliantly curated and titled Alternative Tentacles compilation “Let Then Eat Jellybeans”(A Reagan dessert favorite update to the Marie Antoinette slogan “Let them eat cake”). The Bad Brains song “Pay to Cum” from their first album was on the comp along with songs by Black Flag, The Dead Kennedys, The Circle Jerks, Flipper, etc.. I then went out to find full length records by all those bands. I soon discovered Minor Threat as well, and learned that Bad Brains had influenced their vocalist Ian MacKaye and Black flag vocalist Henry Rollins who were from Washington DC where Bad Brains had started as well. The Bad Brains were also a huge influence for the Beastie Boys. This collaboration ties into almost all of the bands I mentioned because they were almost all iconically shot at various times by photographer Glen E. Friedman. Glen shot a lot of great photos of Bad Brains and a few different shots were spliced together as the reference for this poster illustration. If you don’t know Glen’s work, and you should… go to burningflags.com. This poster is signed by Glen, me, and all the original members of Bad Brains. Keep that PMA.

NIPSEY HUSSLE ON VIMBY

Vimby hit the streets to chop it up with up and coming West Coast rapper Nipsey Hussle. Nipsey is part of the new breed of rappers that are set on carrying the torch of traditional West Coast Gangsta rap. Nipsey has been compared to Snoop, but I feel he definitely has his own thing going on. Look for Nipsey making moves in '09.

"Epic Records is hoping that it will have the newest rap star in L.A.'s Nipsey Hussle, a young and focused rapper and beatsmith who first learned the finer points of creating and engineering his own music at age 14 through an after-school program at the Watts Towers that still exists a decade later. But while his name references the famous late comedian Nipsey Russell, there's nothing funny about Nip Hussle's street-focused subject matter. "Straight outta Slauson, a crazy m*therf*cker named Nipsey," he states, declaring his own South Central identity while tributing the legacy of NWA on "Hussle in the House"

LIL' WAYNE TO APPEAR ON VH1'S "BEHIND THE MUSIC"

VH1 has recently decided to relaunch their long running music documentary series "Behind The Music." There's no better way to set it off than an episode about one of the biggest rappers alive...

The network announced on Thursday (March 19) that the seminal documentary program will be relaunched, and Lil Wayne and Scott Weiland have already signed on.

“We had to rethink a little bit and look at these current artists that are really big stars now, and maybe it isn’t the classic rise and fall,” Krim told MTV News on Thursday. “There’s the classic ‘Behind the Music’ arc, but in this crop we wanted to get some artists that were on top of their game now instead of looking back. And also, just because their big stars now doesn’t mean they necessarily have a great ‘Behind the Music’ kind of story.

“From our research, [Lil Wayne] certainly does. From the fact that when he was a kid he accidentally shot himself and almost died at age 12 while playing with a gun, he went through Katrina, he has [a possible stint in] jail pending. He has all the requisite drama in his life, which I think ultimately makes for the great story. The fact that he’s one of the biggest stars out there makes it the right combination that we’re looking for.

The revamped “Behind The Music” is set to debut in July. As of press time, the air date for Lil Wayne’s episode has not been scheduled.

"I try to stay true to Ralph’s vision. I don’t want to bastardize his vision — no offense to the urban community — because we all know what happened to Tommy Hilfiger once the hip hop community embraced it. I’ll walk out of the door dressed in loafers when everyone else is wearing Timberland boots. I definitely stand out. I’ll tag along with Kanye on shopping trips and look at clothing by designers whose names I’d need to take French lessons to pronounce. He’ll ask me what I think and I’ll be like, whatever. I’ve turned down paying gigs because they’ve tried to dress me in clothing by other designers. Besides record shopping, the only other place I need is a Polo store. I’ll go to Paris and they’ll be like, ‘here’s the Eiffel tower’ and I’m like, ‘whatever, where’s the record store and the Polo store..."

DJ AM FILES 20 MILLION DOLLAR LAWSUIT

DJ AM filed a lawsuit against Learjet and other defendants on Friday (March 13), in connection with last year's plane crash that left him and Travis Barker hospitalized with second and third degree burns all over their bodies.

According to the Associated Press, the celebrity DJ is seeking $20 million in damages -- $10 million for medical expenses, lost earnings, profits and economic damages and another $10 million related to non-economic losses, such as mental and physical pain, documents read.

If the case goes to trial, a jury will decide any damage award.

DJ AM and Travis Barker were the only survivors of the crash in September 2008, which took the lives of four others including Barker's close friend and assistant "Lil" Chris Baker, his bodyguard Charles "Che" Still, and a pilot and co-pilot.

Both AM and Barker were hospitalized for several weeks following the crash.

Learjet has yet to respond to the lawsuit at press time.

LIL WAYNE INTRODUCES YOUNG MONEY

From MTV News:
The crew consists of familiar names from Wayne’s albums and mixtapes including Drake, Mack Maine, Nicki Minaj, Jae Millz, Tyga and newer artists Gudda Gudda, T-Streets, Lil Twist, Lil Chuckee and Shanell, who co-wrote her boss’ latest hit, “Prom Queen.”

Wayne’s currently putting the finishing touches on his next project, his rock debut, Rebirth, now due May 19, and is also working on a number of other albums, from a Hot Boyz reunion LP to Tha Carter IV. But if his plans go right, he said the world will also see the release of a Young Money group album, a solo project by a Young Money member and a single from a second member by the end of 2009.

The collective shot a video for their buzz single “Every Girl in the World” that should be airing soon. The explicit track isn’t the official single, Wayne warned. He said the proper first single will be huge, but the world will just have to wait for that one.

“We gonna be that clique, that record company, that everybody wanna be with, everybody wanna be like,” he said. “You remember Bad Boy, you remember No Limit, you remember Cash Money. … We coming back with that. We bringing that back.”

This is dope! No word yet on an official release date!

EYEONE & PATRICK MARTINEZ "NEW WORKS"

By now you should all be aware of the upcoming artshow this Saturday entitled "New Works." New works features the art of two of my favorite L.A. artists, Eyeone and Patrick Martinez.
Eyeone has shown his work a few times at Tradition, and by now his stark, high contrast, and heavily layered photo transfers should be very recognizable to most of you.
Patrick Martinez's work is heavily rooted in the L.A. graffiti scene. His work contains quite a bit of satire as well as a political commentary about his environment. Patrick works closely with Mr. Cartoon and Estevan Oriol at SA Studios, and has done work with such heavyweights as Stussy, Rime Magazine, and Upper Playground.
The two have collaborated on a limited edition 'Zine exclusively for the show. You can check out additional preview images on the Juxtapoz website.

DANIEL WILSON: SKETCHBOOK PROJECT

Daniel Wilson is a talented illustrator and graphic artist from the Bay Area. He recently created a sketchbook as part of a traveling artshow for the Art House Co-Op gallery in Atlanta GA. Every artist was given the same blank 3x5 moleskin notebook and were asked to fill the pages anyway the saw fit.
Daniel launched a very interesting website with detailed images of the artwork from his sketchbook which he titled "Everyone We Know."

"I brought my sketchbook with me on my travels through Rome, Italy and Barcelona, Spain. On the plane ride over I began testing my brain and trying to create new styles and different ways of illustrating my characters in an attempt to create something a little different on every page. This turned into a 30 page creative challenge that I really got into...I still honestly can’t tell you where most of these characters come from but they do flow easily from my pen. As this Project evolved I now get to look at them as a complete body of work and figure where I want to take them next. "

STOUDEMIRE OUT FOR SEASON

The Phoenix Suns had hoped that if Amare Stoudemire recovered quickly enough from surgery to repair a torn retina, he could return to the team for the playoffs, if it qualified. That hope was dashed Thursday, when the doctor who performed Stoudemire's surgery ruled out any return at all this season, playoffs included. Of course the injury happened against my Clippers!

"It's very difficult to explain to anyone how serious this is," Dr. Pravin Dugel said, according to The Arizona Republic. "It's more serious than any knee or ankle surgery. The healing is excruciatingly slow and delicate." It had originally been hoped that Stoudemire could recover enough to resume activity in eight weeks but Dugel said the recovery could take months, according to the report, Stoudemire is not even allowed to attend Suns home games, due to the danger any jarring could pose.

NIKE RT1

The official photos of the Nike Air Yeezy have been released, and to be honest I am a little disappointed. It seems like the actual production models received some changes (for the worse) to the shoes spotted on 'Ye's feet on his Glow In The Dark tour. I am actually feeling the Nike RT1 more than the Yeezy.

One of the most talked about new shoes from Nike Sportswear’s Summer 2009 Collection has been the Nike RT1, which some might call the “Un-Yeezy” due to it’s similarities with the Nike x Kanye West Air Yeezy sneaker. While the Nike RT1 might share some similar features to it’s silhouette as the Air Yeezy the shoe is built on a completely different midsole and outsole and additionally does not feature the midfoot strap that the Yeezy has. Additionally some good news about the RT1 is that it retails for much less than the Air Yeezy. This first colorway in Black and Red will be hitting Tradition in April.

EMINEM TO RELEASE 2 ALBUMS IN 2009

Damm... Eminem is back on his grind after a short hiatus, and has plans to release 2 albums in 2009. Read the official press release below...

Eminem, the biggest selling music artist of the decade, officially announced the street date of his eagerly awaited new album; his first original studio album in over four years. Relapse (Interscope/ Aftermath/Shady) will be released on May 19, 2009. The first single from the album and its accompanying video will see a simultaneous release on April 7th.

Anticipation for Relapse has been building since the fall, when Eminem first announced the album title and debuted the freestyle, “I’m Having A Relapse,” during an interview on his Shade 45 satellite radio station. Last month, the release of “Crack A Bottle” from Eminem, Dr. Dre and 50 Cent brought that anticipation to a head. The track soared to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 (Eminem’s second #1 after 2002’s “Lose Yourself”) and set a Nielsen SoundScan record for opening week download sales (418,000). The recording ranked third in the history of all weekly download sales. “Crack A Bottle” will be included as an album track on Relapse.

With the announcement of the release date for Relapse also comes confirmation of something that had been rumored in recent weeks: Eminem is already working on a follow-up album, Relapse 2, that fans can expect in the second half of 2009. “A lot of people were expecting Relapse to drop last year,” said Eminem. “I was one of them. Then Dre and I went back in the studio in September for a few days, and that turned into six months. We were on such a roll; we wound up with a ton of new music produced by Dre. Putting out Relapse 2 will let everyone get all of the best stuff.”

YOSHIMOTO NARA GETS ARRESTED FOR GRAFFITI

Japanese artist Yoshitomo Nara didn’t have time for the usual last-minute preparations before the Feb. 28 opening of his show at Marianne Boesky Gallery in New York. Like Shepard Fairey, who was arrested on his way to the opening of his retrospective at the Boston ICA last month, Nara was busy earning some street cred, and getting an introduction to the New York City jail system.
Known for his paintings and sculptures of doe-eyed figures, Nara was arrested the day before his show for tagging graffiti-a portrait in marker of two Japanese friends-at the Union Square subway station. Subsisting on peanut butter sandwiches and milk, he spent two days in the downtown jail, which he optimistically described as “a nice experience in my life,” saying it was “like in the movies,” a small space filled with all manner of people he would not otherwise meet. Nara’s show is on view at Boesky through Mar. 28. He’ll be back in town before the opening of his survey at the Asia Society in September 2010, but he doesn’t plan on being a repeat offender.

CASH MONEY RECORDS SUED BY PRODUCER

Cash Money Records was sued last week for breach of contract by a former producer T Mix who claims he's owed more than $2 million from the label for his work with several of their artists including Birdman and Lil Wayne.

According to Courthouse News Service, the producer (real name: Tristan Jones) filed a federal lawsuit last week in which he claims to have been signed to an exclusive production contract with Cash Money Records from November 2005 to sometime in 2007,

During that time, he produced more than 40 master recordings for songs on successful albums such as Birdman's 5 * Stunna, the Lil Wayne/Birdman collabo album Like Father Like Son, Fast Money, and Tha Carter II.

T Mix claims he was promised production royalties on the suggested retail list price, but only received a portion of what he's owned.

He claims the label has profited more than $30 million from his music, but he was paid just $187,000.

T Mix seeks damages for breach of contract in excess of $2.25 million.
