REPORT: CURRY FATHER OF SLAIN BABY

Eddy Curry reportedly was the father of the 9-month-old girl murdered along with her mother, Curry's ex-girlfriend, last Saturday. Curry's 3 year old son, Noah, was unhurt. The slain woman was also the mother of Curry's son. The Chicago Sun-Times, citing sources familiar with the paternity case between Curry and the deceased Nova Henry, reported that Curry was the biological father of 9-month-old Ava. The newspaper reported that a court document contains a DNA test that confirms Curry as the father of the 9-month-old. A relative found the bodies of Henry, 24, and her 9-month-old daughter in their Chicago apartment saturday evening, according to police. Both died from multiple gunshot wounds. Curry's son was found unharmed at the scene. The Sun-Times reported that a person with the same last name as the murdered 9-month-old has been questioned by police. KAWS - THE LONG WAY HOME

It looks like KAWS is finally going to make it out to the West Coast for his first solo show in Los Angeles. See the press release below.
The Brooklyn-based artist will be presenting new painting and sculptural work in his first solo show in Los Angeles. KAWS’ technique acts as a sieve of modern culture, filtering and re-contextualizing the images and information that he comes in contact with daily. His process is all encompassing, embracing popular culture and the visual landscape of the familiar. The work can be thought of as an overarching brand; however it is also immediate and organic. This energetic immediacy can be felt in the selection of works that he is presenting.

New large paintings included in the exhibition feature his usual cross-section of familiar cultural icons painted with precise execution. The resulting pieces feature the trademark graphic quality inherent in his work. A large life-size Chum acts as a sentry in the space, watching over the works while also playing with scale and proportion.

You can check out the first single, "Prom Queen," here. Don't get me wrong, I think Wayne is a talented dude, but this shit is horrible! He sounds like HR on (more) crack! I'm sure his fans are going to eat this up, but I can't back this at all.

GUNNING FOR THE #1 SPOT

Lots of people think Lebron has taken the crown from Kobe as the best player in the world! Who's your pick? I think Lebron is inching closer but until he gets some championships under his belt Kobe is still the king! Lebron is a freak of nature though! Lakers vs Cavs tonight, we'll see who will out play who!

SO YOU WANT TO PLAY FOOTBALL HUH?

Willis McGahee joined his teammates today at Baltimore's training complex after doctors told him he would make a full recovery from a fierce helmet-to-helmet hit in the AFC Championship Game that had him carted off the field. "I'm all right. Everything is OK," the running back told reporters as the Ravens cleared out their lockers. "The MRI and the CAT scan checked out good. I was scared, but I didn't know how serious it was. It was pretty intense." The play occurred in the fourth quarter of Pittsburgh's 23-14 victory. McGahee had just caught a pass and taken two steps before being met by safety Ryan Clark, who drove his helmet into McGahee's facemask. McGahee's head snapped back, and he lost the ball as he dropped to the ground. It was scary cause he was knocked OUT COLD and his right arm stayed stiff...

COPYRIGHT CRIMINALS

Copyright Criminals: This Is a Sampling Sport examines the creative and commercial value of musical sampling, including the related debates over artistic expression, copyright law, and (of course) money.

This documentary traces the rise of hip-hop from the urban streets of New York to its current status as a multibillion-dollar industry. For more than thirty years, innovative hip-hop performers and producers have been re-using portions of previously recorded music in new, otherwise original compositions. When lawyers and record companies got involved, what was once referred to as a “borrowed melody” became a “copyright infringement.”

The film showcases many of hip-hop music’s founding figures like Public Enemy, De La Soul, and Digital Underground—while also featuring emerging hip-hop artists from record labels Definitive Jux, Rhymesayers, Ninja Tune, and more. It also provides an in-depth look at artists who have been sampled, such as Clyde Stubblefield (James Brown's drummer and the world's most sampled musician), as well as commentary by another highly sampled musician, funk legend George Clinton.

As artists find ever more inventive ways to insert old influences into new material, this documentary asks a critical question, on behalf of an entire creative community: Can you own a sound?

CEASE & DESIST

Branding, addiction, sneaker culture and legal infringement are explored when artist/designer Ari Saal Forman mash-ups the lively Newport cigarette brand into a cool “Nike-like” sneaker.
Shot at the height of the sneaker movement in 2006 and in present day, the short film reveals how trends quickly turn and how these urban expressionists compete even harder to stand out. Sneaker collectors soon face their own (cigarette like) addictions and Ari gets a legal gag for his clever design.
The “alive with pleasure” moment that “legally never happened” is presented with before and after accounts in the trailer for the newest documentary by John Carluccio.

MADE IN AMERICA

Stacy Peralta is best known as an original Z-Boy, one half of the skateboard giant Powell Peralta, and the director of one of the best skateboard documentaries ever made, "Dogtown and Z-Boys." Peralta is now turning his lenses on the origins of L.A.'s gang culture in his newest documentary "Crips and Bloods: Made in America."
While "Dogtown" was brilliantly narrated by Sean Penn, "Made in America" is narrated by Academy Award winner Forest Whitaker, an excellent choice in my opinion. While the subject matter may not be as close to Peralta's heart as that of "Dogtown," I am sure the director did an impressive job.
"Made in America" opens at NYC’s IFC Theater (January 23–29), before moving to LA’s Laemmle’s Sunset 5 (February 6–12), the film will continue on with arthouse showings in Chicago, San Francisco, Portland, and Seattle before seeing mass release.

EXILE ON VIMBY

We've been posting about Exile for a minute now, so most of you should be familiar with him by now... If not, get familiar. Vimby got up close and personal with Exile, and they discuss his new album "Radio" which drops next week as well as the making of the video for "We're All in Power."

REUNION

I just found this flier online for a reunion "fest" of sorts that is going down in March at Chain Reaction. Some of O.C.'s most popular bands from the late 80's and early 90's (and Amenity from S.D.) are all going to hit the stage together. I heard rumors yesterday about this show, and a few other band's names were being thrown around including Pushed Aside and Drift Again. We will see how this one pans out.

SHEPARD FAIREY ON COLBERT REPORT

Shepard Fairey recently appeared on The Colbert Report. Shepard recently hit a new level of mainstream recognition with his contributions to Obama's presidential campaign, and I can only see his popularity as an artist rising in the upcoming years.
It's nice to see an artist of his stature still so humble and level headed.

NAS - THE WORLD (PROD. BY KANYE WEST)

Here's a new joint from Nas called "The World" that was produced by Kanye West. It's nice to hear Nas over some better beats, although the mix of this track is a little off.
Nas, the rapper who claimed “Hip Hop is Dead” just a few years ago thinks someone has saved the genre. The Queensbridge emcee says Kanye West has breathed air back into the art form and Lil’ Wayne has opened doors for future artists to continue doing this.
In a recent interview with Complex magazine he states “I think Kanye West saved rap. I think Lil Wayne is showing there is a future for all kinds of artists to continue doing this. You know, I love it.”

UGK - DA GAME BEEN GOOD TO ME

Here's a new track from UGK called "Da Game Been Good To Me." This track is on some old Goodie Mob type shit. Definitely worth downloading.

One of the greatest commercials ever!

MF DOOM - BALLSKIN

I haven't heard anything about MF Doom for a minute. If I have, it was about his clone showing up to his shows and trying to pretend it was him... Anyway, I'm still a fan. Peep the newest track from Metal Face called "Ballskin."

ICE CUBE - DEATH CERTIFICATE SAMPLES

Here's something for all you producers and music fans out there... The original samples from Ice Cube's classic album "Death Certificate." There are 72 tracks including classics from James Brown, Roger Troutman, Parliament, Donald Byrd, and more.

MCA CUSTOM BLIND BOX QEES

MCA is no stranger to the toy game. He has produced many toys in collaboration with some of the biggest names in the business.
MCA recently stopped by the Toy2R offices in Hong Kong to custom paint 90 Qees for a very special blind box series. MCA painted a variety of different 8" Qees that will retail for only $80 if you can find them! Happy hunting.

MAJOR CAR CRASH ON PCH

Yesterday on my way home I was just minutes away from a serious car crash! I was stopped on PCH for about 45 minutes. It all happened so fast that people were jumping out there cars to see what happened ahead. I had my new camera on me and I just started acting like paparazzi.. The crash was so bad that a woman had to be air lifted out in a helicopter. A helicopter landing on PCH, shit was crazy! I caught it all.. Damn, should of sold some pics to the L.A Times.. Hopefully the lady is ok!

The helicopter just landed on PCH. Crazy!

This is what the traffic was like behind me.

The back of the crash site. You can see a little bit of the woman's mini cooper.

Weird, the paramedics didn't seem to rush to get the woman to the helicopter.

Loading the woman in the helicopter. She seemed coherent.

Off to the Hospital.

DALEK WEBSITE RELAUNCHED

One of my favorite artists, and long time friend, James Marshall aka Dalek just relaunched his newly renovated website. James is most known for his "Space Monkey" character which dates back to 1995. He honed his studio skills working as an assistant to Takashi Murakami in 2001, which furthered his minimalist super-flat style. He has been featured in many books and magazines, designed clothing, toys, and skateboards, and has shown his work in galleries all over the world. Dalek's next show, "Broken, Beaten, and Buried," opens January 23rd at Redux Contemporary Art Center in South Carolina.
To coincide with the relaunch of his website, James released 2 limited edition signed and numbered prints which are sure to disappear fast. You can purchase the prints here.

JAY-Z - PASS THE THE ROC (DEMO)

Here's an early Jay-Z demo called "Pass The Roc." This comes DJ Mike Nice's upcoming Brookyln Bullshit mixtape which includes rare and unreleased tracks from Jay, Biggie, Big Daddy Kane, Kool G Rap, And more. The quality of this track isn't the best (you can even hear some tape hiss), but it is a demo and it's got that old school flavor that you just don't hear anymore.

THE HUNDREDS X AMERICAN EAGLE OUTIFTTERS

You all know that The Hundreds is huge, but c'mon... a collab with American Eagle Outfitters? What is this world coming to?
Before you guys get all upset and start screaming sell out, this isn't a true collab... American Eagle actually took the liberty to blatantly rip off The Hundreds' Adam Bomb logo! I've seen this before, where a huge chain rips off a graphic from a smaller company, but this is ridiculous!
They should be ashamed of themselves!

FASHAWN - BOY MEETS WORLD TRAILER

Here's a video trailer for Fashwan's upcoming album with Exile called "Boy Meets World". Below is the video for "Our Way" featuring Evidence, which is the first single from the album.

INTERVIEW: CALMA

Iggor from Sepultura/Mixhell put me on to Calma a while back. Calma is part of a new crop of Brazilian contemporary artists that are garnering some attention in the States at the moment. Calma has roots in graffiti, and his style combines a fusion of Brazilian folk art and religious imagery while still staying true to the roots of the Sao Paulo Graffiti style.
Calma recently had a show at the Jonathan Levine Gallery in New York. You can read the interview with Calma here.

LIL' WAYNE VS 50 CENT

A few days ago 50 dropped a song called "Play This On The Radio" which dissed Wayne at the end of the track. Today Wayne responded with a track called "Lousianimal."
"All about a dolla, f*ck 2 quarters... B*itch I'll pour syrup in that Vitamin Water... I Hope you die ugly and tonight will be gorgeous!"

NOTORIOUS @ THE MONTALBON

Last night, Nike held an advance screening of Notorious at the Montalbon Theatre in Hollywood. I was actually a little skeptical of the movie, and did not have high expectations going in. With that being said, Notorious was actually a pretty decent movie. Gravy did a good job as B.I.G., and I thought the girl that played Lil' Kim was dead on. Tupac could have used a little work, but overall I was impressed.
Notorious opens on Friday, so let me know what you think.

PACIFIC DIVISION - LET'S GO

Here's the first leak from Don Cannon's “Cool Guys Always Finish First” mixtape. The track is by Pac Div, and it is called "Let's Go."
The mixtape drops Monday, and it features Fly.Union, Pacific Division, Naledge (Kidz in the Hall), Curren$y, Al Fatz, Ray Cash and Little Brother among others.
Why is the Cannon drop louder than the track?

CARTER - STAY DOWN FOREVER

Here's a new track from an upcoming L.A. (via Houston) artist named Carter. The track is called "Stay Down Forever," and it is actually a really dope track. You might recognize him from the "Everybody Knows Us" video that The Hundreds did with Pac Div and Dom Kennedy.

RZA - WHAR FT. KOOL G RAP, GHOSTFACE, AND TASH MAHOGANY

Here's a new RZA track from he upcoming Afro Samurai Resurrection soundtrack... Of course Ghostface kills it. You can download "Whar" here.

DJ RHETTMATIC - PURE FUNK MODE

Here's the newest mixtape from DJ Rhettmatic of the world famous Beat Junkies. You can download it for free here.
In his own words...
"Here's a new mix for yall to download & listen to. I did this mix in conjunction with www.247hh.com. My man Jellow from Chrewd Marketing in Chicago reached out to me to do a little mix for the website he helped build; he was inspired by the KDAY mix that I sent out & wanted to do something with that type of vibe.

It's a 30 minute mix with some Funk shit (not the P-Funk, but Funky Soul shit) & some classic & new Hip Hop shit. It's something to get your James Brown on. Go ahead & share with your friends..."

JIM JONES - BYRDGANG SWAGGER

Here's a little video preview of Jim Jones' "Swagger Like Us" remix which originally featured Lil' Wayne and Twista but now features Juelz and Frekey Zekey... Dude has to many quotes!
"I don't know what corner they from... We from the corners that do it... On my corners we make swag and sell it to ya'll"
"N*ggas can't touch me like Jim had the cooties!"

UNRELEASED RIVAL SCHOOLS

I have pretty much been a fan of every band that Walter Schreifels has been in. From his early days in YOT and GB, to Quicksand, Rival Schools, and even his acoustic stuff, Walter is able to make some of my favorite songs ever regardless of genre. When Rival Schools reunited last year, you know I had to check out their only L.A. appearance at The Echo.
Supposedly, Rival School are working on a new album which is set to be released sometime this year. In the meantime, check out "The Lost Album" and "The Unreleased Sessions. The quality isn't the best, but it's nice to hear some new material form these guys (which may or may not make it onto their upcoming album).

HAS HE LOST HIS MIND?

Kanye says some strange things sometimes (with or without autotune on his voice). In the newest issue of Vibe, not only does 'Ye say he wants less fans, but he also said that he is going to pose nude (WTF????).

"I want the freedom of having less fans. It's like the freedom of having less money. If you have less money, you have less responsibility. It's like Björk. If she wanted to pose naked, you'd be like, 'Oh, that's Björk.' But if I wanted to pose naked, people would draw all type of things into it. I definitely feel like, in the next however many years, if I work out for two months, that I'll pose naked."

FREEZING YOUR ASS OFF-FOR REAL!!

In a bizarre incident that will surely lead to litigation, a skier at Colorado's ritzy Vail resort was left dangling upside down and pantsless from a chair lift Thursday morning. The mishap apparently occurred after the male skier, 48, and a child boarded a high-speed lift in Vail's Blue Sky Basin. It appears that the chairlift's fold-down seat was somehow not in the lowered position, which caused the man to partially fall through the resulting gap. His right ski got jammed in the ascending chairlift, and that kept him upended since his boot never dislodged from its binding. The Skyline Express lift was stopped shortly after the pair's botched boarding resulted in the man dangling from the lift. The exposed skier was stuck for about 15 minutes before Vail personnel backed the lift up and successfully dislodged the unidentified man from the four-seat chair.

MAN-COW?

NO COMMENT!! HAHAHA

BARKLEY TO TAKE LEAVE OF ABSENCE

The announcement by Turner Sports came today, hours after police said the 45-year-old former NBA star was legally drunk when police arrested him Dec. 31 on suspicion of drunken driving in Scottsdale, Ariz. Test results show Barkley had a blood-alcohol level at .149, nearly twice the legal limit of .08 in Arizona. While waiting for results of the blood test, TNT considered suspending Barkley if the results showed his blood-alcohol content was over the legal limit, a source told ESPN.com but I guess he decided to take a leave before the suspension. Barkley will be off the air for a minimum of several weeks and no return date has been set.

LIL WAYNE - RED RUM FT. DRE

Here's another new track from Wayne called "Red Rum" produced by Cool & Dre. Of course Wayne broke out the auto tune for this one. Why does every rapper want to be a singer?

EXILE - WE'RE ALL IN POWER

Exile "Were All In Power" from Okayplayer on Vimeo.

Exile is definitely a producer to keep your eye on. The former member of Emanon (which also featured Aloe Blacc) has been producing for such heavy hitters as Blu, Mobb Deep, Ghostface, Fashawn, and many others. "We're All In Power" is the first single from Exile's solo album, "Radio" which drops later this month. This video is so fresh, and it is reminiscent of White Stripe's "Hardest Button to Button."

K'NAAN ON VIMBY

K'Naan isn't really my cup of tea, but he is doing his own thing. There's nothing wrong with music with a message.
Born in Mogadishu, Somalia, K'naan spent his childhood in the district of Wardhiigleey ("The Lake of Blood") during the Somali Civil War, which began in 1991. His aunt, Magool, was one of Somalia's most famous singers. K'naan's father, Abdi, left the country, along with many other intellectuals to settle in New York City and work as a cab driver. He mailed money home to his family—and for K'naan, hip hop albums by artists like Nas and Rakim.[3] Despite speaking no English, the young K'naan taught himself hip hop and rap diction, copying the lyrics and style phonetically.
Critics have said K'naan has "a sound that fuses Bob Marley, conscious American hip hop, and brilliant protest poetry." K'naan makes "urgent music with a message", talking about the situation in his homeland of Somalia and calling for an end to violence and bloodshed.

The company’s latest creation: the One Million $ Black Caviar Bang tourbillion watch, is a striking gold model with 322 black diamonds invisibly set to conceal any sign of metal. BUY A PIECE OF DEATHROW!

The New York Daily News reports a substantial amount of unreleased recordings by 2Pac, Snoop Dogg and other former Death Row artists will be auctioned off on January 15. The material stems from the 2006 bankruptcy sale of Death Row Records' assets after Marion "Suge" Knight filed for Chapter 11 protection. Todd Nielsen, the Chapter 11 trustee of the Death Row Estate, tells the Daily News that the catalogue contains thousands of unreleased recordings.
They go on to say that between the economic situation and Suge's reputation/delusions of grandeur could scare off potential buyers.
I am going have to get my money right, and see if I can get an unreleased 'Pac verse!

EMINEM FT. DRE DRE AND 50 CENT - CRACK A BOTTLE

Here's the finished version of Em's track "Crack A Bottle" which we leaked a while back. This version features Dre and 50 Cent, and is probably the finished version.
Damm... Two posts about 50 in one day? What are we turning into?

50 CENT - I GET IT IN (PROD. BY DR. DRE)

50 Cent is back with a new Dr. Dre produced single called "I Get It In" from his upcoming album "Before I Self Destruct." I'm not a huge 50 fan, but this is sure to be a hit in the clubs... I could do without the "Hip Hop Hooray" type chorus, but that's just me... The beat bangs, but it sounds more like a Focus beat than a Dre beat.

Young, 20, was found unresponsive by his mother, Jenita Porter, 40, in their Woodland Hills, Calif., home on the morning of Aug. 23. Porter told investigators that her son had been out with friends that night, and she recalled hearing him snoring around 5:30 a.m.

Thanks to Drew too for the phone call. Enjoy the pics and click them to make them larger!

BEST OF 2008: RE-CAP

So here it is... The moment you have all been waiting for... The results to our "Best of 2008" poll. I wanted to do this a little more democratically, and rather than tell you guys what I thought was the best of 2008, I decided to let our readers vote. Some results were close to what I had anticipated, while others threw me for a loop... Here we go.

ALBUM OF THE YEAR:
This was actually a tie, and it came pretty close to a three way tie. I was pretty sure that Lil' Wayne's "TC3" was gonna take it for sure, and I was actually quite surprised that N.E.R.D.'s "Seeing Sounds" even made it anywhere near the top... Third place went to Kanye West's "808's & Heartbreak."

COLLAB OF THE YEAR:
Again, this one resulted in a tie. Up first was our three way collab with Raekwon and Akomplice. This whole event was definitely one of my personal highlights of 2008. Not only did we do an official collab with a member of the Wu, we also had an amazing in store performance by Raekwon! I definitely need to shout out the homies at Akomplice for helping to make this possible.
The other contender for the title was the Nike X Clark Kent "112 Pack." This was one of my personal favorite shoe releases of the year as well. Three dope shoes, in a fresh colorway, with some 3M thrown in for good measure. DJ Clark Kent called Tradition to order both of our limited New Era's, and he was one of the nicest, most humble people that I have spoken to. He gave me some insight into some future collabs that he will be dropping in 2009, and trust me... You guys are going to go crazy for what he has in store for you.

ARTIST OF THE YEAR:
I was excited to see that the recipient in the "Artist of the Year" category was our good friend and very talented artist, Derek Albeck. Derek has shown his work a number of times at Tradition, and he had really been instrumental in helping organize and hang many of the shows that we have at the shop. He has a solo show opening on January 10th in Chinatown, and I suggest you all do your best to check it out.

BLOG OF THE YEAR:
The results in this category shocked me... Winning by a landslide was our favorite employee Bui's sneaker blog Thisis50yen.blogspot.com! He must have told every Vietnamese relative he had to vote, because there were over 20 times the vote in this category than any other! Anyway, Thisis50yen is a blog for all you sneaker lovers out there, done by the only sneakerhead in Simi Valley... It's definitely worth checking out at least once!
Coming in a second place was our good friends at Kilos&Grams. The guys at Kilos always have their ears to the streets, and it's good to see that some of you guys have been checking their site out too.

BRAND OF THE YEAR:
Crooks & Castles has consistently been our best selling brand since we opened. Crooks continues to improve each season while maintaining the original look of the brand. Expect big things from these guys in 2009!

ONLY WHITE GUYS DO THIS!

Australian stuntman Robbie Maddison rode into the new year with a death-defying feat in Las Vegas. Speeding down the strip outside Paris Las Vegas casino, he launched his Yamaha motocross bike up a giant ramp, flew through the air and landed on top of a replica of the Arc de Triomphe. The stunt was equivalent to jumping on a 10-storey apartment building. But thats not the crazy part, After landing safely, the 27-year-old showman dropped down off the Arc de Triomphe and free-falled to a landing ramp below. It was crazy! Check it out!

U-N-I - CALIFORNIA SOUL

Here's the first single off U-N-I’s upcoming "Before There Was Love" mixtape with Mick Boogie called "California Soul."
This track was produced by Diabolic. U-N-I's upcoming album "A Love Supreme" is due out in March.

TERMANLOLOGY - IF HEAVEN WAS A MILE AWAY

Termanology just dropped his latest mixtape, a tribute to J Dilla, called "If Heaven Was a Mile Away." I haven't had a chance to hear it yet, but OnSmash says that it's a contender for the mixtape of the year!

FREEWAY - MONTH OF MADNESS

Over the last month, Freeway has been releasing a song a day for a project he called "Month of Madness." I didn't really have the time to upload each track everyday, but here's a link to every song with a bonus track thrown in for good measure.
